Buying a home… in Japan?

Hi from Anthony and Jodie! We are the Learners and Makers. Traveling the world full time since 2022, we empower families and people with mobility disabilities to travel confidently, their way.

As you might have noticed, we are big fans of Japan. Japan was Connor’s first foreign country—when he was 15 months old. After hearing about Japan for years, when Aster had her first visit in 2023, she too took in the wonder and deep affection we feel.

After that 2023 trip, we started kicking around an idea.

And after we spent 3 more months in Japan in 2024, that idea stopped being a “what if maybe maybe” discussion. Instead, it became a major family priority.

We decided to buy a home in Japan.

In a nutshell, foreigners can buy property in Japan the same as people who are Japanese. Owning property doesn’t confer any special rights or benefits though, other than not having to look for accommodation every time we want to visit Japan.

This week, we’re sharing part of our journey, and for anyone interested, some of the resources we’ve found helpful along the way.

The carry-on backpack that’s survived 3 years of full-time travel

After 3 years of full-time travel, we thought it was a good idea to check over our his-and-hers Cotopaxi Allpa 35L travel backpacks. From Malaysia to Mexico to Morocco, we've stashed them in overhead compartments on planes, tucked them between our feet on buses, and tetrised them into car trunks.

The verdict? Both packs show minimal wear and function as well as day one.

The Allpas distribute weight evenly, which is crucial for Jodie's comfort and endurance when walking with her prosthetic leg. The discreet tech compartments keep our laptops secure and protected. We love how the main clamshell-style opening gives us quick access and efficient organization.

If you're shopping for a reliable travel backpack, for yourself or as a gift, Cotopaxi’s Allpa line offers sizes from 28L to 42L to match different travel styles:

Women with a prosthetic leg walks while wearing a 35-liter carryon backpack on her back through the airport

Hi from Anthony and Jodie! We are the Learners and Makers. Traveling the world full time since 2022, we empower families and people with mobility disabilities to travel confidently, their way. While our family gets ready for an epic travel day, Jodie and I realized something: Most travelers do it backward. They invest in expensive checked luggage, then grab whatever cheap backpack fits under the seat. Throughout our 3 years of full-time family travel, we've flipped that approach. Our Cotopaxi...
